So. Much. Happened.

I feel badly about abandoning this blog, but I’m happy to be back. Kind of the same feeling you get when you see an old high school friend again and it’s as if very little time has passed and everything comes rushing back. So much has happened since I’ve last written.

I felt like quitting and not running the Disney Princess Half Marathon. Between injuries and being a mom, closing on our first home, and life in general, I let my lazy tendencies get the best of me and I stopped training. I am not ashamed to admit it because it’s really not what happened to us that matters, but how we bounce back.

I knew I had disappointed my husband, who so badly wanted me to train well for the races, and so I decided I wasn’t going to let him or any of my fundraising contributors down by skipping out on the race, so this past weekend, off we went to Orlando.

I knew I could finish the races, I was completely determined to. The only part that kind of sucked was seeing how many friends were there, and how I really would have loved to be running it with Mike, but he was back in our hotel room snuggled up with our baby while I was running in 40 something degree weather.

I finished the 10k and Half Marathon, so I can now say I completed the Glass Slipper Challenge. It was amazing and I can’t wait to get back on the training wagon and run another race. I completed it doing 1:1 intervals at my own pace, and averaged somewhere between 14:30 and 15 minute miles, ridiculously slow, I know but hey, at this point I was just focusing on finishing, not time. We all gotta start somewhere and I think I can only go up from here!

One hour run.

I was supposed to do 6.5 miles today but I stopped at 4.66 because of a niggling pain in my Achilles. I’m so disappointed and not sure how I can keep myself injury free.

I’m trying to stay positive and keep the faith that I am still getting stronger each run,  but my splits this run were not good. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Maybe because I was running on the track? Or because I could see our car from the track and I knew my husband was waiting for me with the baby? It feels like it’s turning into a mental battle and I’m not able to run in the carefree way I was running before I injured my knee.

Speed Drills on the track

Yesterday’s track run was 2 sided. It was awesome meeting Lori, our new running coach, and a really nice group of fellow runners, and I was able to get a short run in,  about a mile and a half.

I also was able to do my MM, and it was 10:30 which is a lot faster than my usual 12 minute pace, so that was exciting. I’m really starting to feel stronger and is super exciting.

On the flip side, I wasn’t able to really do the speed drill for the night because caring for a  10 month old infant ain’t easy on a track at her bedtime.

We’ll figure out a way to manage it, but mike and I both enjoyed the experience and looking forward to getting faster.

So many updates.

So I am running a lot, but writing very little. The amazing thing is I’ve managed to stay pain free. I’m trying to learn as much about running as I can to be able to train effectively.

Tonight we are meeting with a local running coach to learn some speed drills on a track. How awesome is that? I’m so glad I’m doing it now when I don’t feel like a complete beginner because at least I feel like I’ll survive the drills.

Over the last week, I feel like I’ve seen massive improvement in both my times and endurance. Now basically all my runs are 3 miles. I remember the days when 1 mile seemed crazy, lol.

One day I had to run on the treadmill and I was able to run 3 miles without stopping. My husband told me not to get too excited because running on the treadmill is easier lol. Always keeping me grounded.

I’m doing the Galloway method and feel like I’m having success. My last 2 runs have been running 2:30 walking 1 minute. I’m looking forward to increasing to 3:1.

You can see in my last 2 runs, a big improvement running the same 2:30:1.

I’ll have another post from the speed drills tonight and another post coming soon about some gear I’ve recently bought.

1/2 way to Disney & 4 Miles!

Run Disney

I am SUPER excited to share that I’ve reached the halfway point in my fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network and we’re now working on my husband’s fundraiser so he can run the princess Half Marathon and 10K (Glass Slipper Challenge) with me! Hotel room is BOOKED, budget is set, Here We Come!!

If you’re interested in his fundraiser page and helping us reach our goals, check it out here:¬†bit.ly/mikedphm

I’ve been running the Galloway method for this upcoming training 3 times a week, and have had some really awesome runs. I’m not cutting any corners because we actually want to survive running 19 miles that weekend! I am feeling so strong and loving my runs. I’ve found that I run best to Katy Perry and less fast to audio books, but I still like changing it up and doing a little of both.

Are you on Garmin Connect or Nike Plus? Add me as a friend and let’s challenge and encourage each other!

I’m here on Garmin: Lisette

and here on Nike+: Lisette

Here are my latest run stats:

I am still not running a super fast pace, but it’s not super slow either. Ok… Not sure who I’m kidding, it is pretty slow, but I’m getting stronger and able to run the same pace on a more consistent basis, so I’m ready to speed up the turnover a little! Looking forward to tomorrow’s run since the Galloway program only includes 3 runs a week. I may increase that to 4 on my own, and incorporate more cross training. My back really starts to get sore after the longer runs so I want to strengthen my core to feel more comfortable over a longer distance.

Those are my thoughts for now! Can’t wait till my next run!

Flanigan’s 10k Recap

So, I feel like a rock star! I’ve had a couple of days to recover and process that I ran a 10k. It feels like an awesome accomplishment, but also just the tip of the iceberg because I have to jump right into 10k and half marathon training for Disney in February.

So here’s my race recap  (so cool that I’m writing that after reading so many other people’s!) :

We spent the night at my brother and sister in laws the night before since she was watching the baby for us and we didn’t want to have to put her in a car seat at 5am. I know those who have babies will understand. I barely slept… Probably a combination of reasons like not being in our own bed, nerves, excitement, plus the baby still wakes at night to nurse. So when the alarm went off at 5, I was ready to get up.
I had a banana and half a bagel with peanut butter for breakfast since that seemed the safest to not upset my stomach. I normally have coffee every morning but I actually skipped it for the same reason, my sensitive stomach.
We rode to the park in the pitch dark, I was so happy it was only about 15 minutes away. We got there around 6am and it hadn’t gotten super packed yet so we were able to park close. It was freezing! Since I never get up that early, I honestly had no idea how cold the predawn hours are.

We made our way over to the main announcement pavilion and it was so cool to see runners of all ages, shapes and sizes. I was super excited to be a part of it finally. At 6:45, we got the instructions to head over to the start line and we started somewhere in the middle. I’d heard from a passerby that there were 1000 runners.

They sang the national anthem and we were off. I started my garmin and started my first race ever.

We ran the first 1.5 miles. We talked about feeling it out and see how we felt and maybe do intervals the whole time , but I wanted to run as much as I could to warm up and challenge myself. 1.5 miles was pretty good for where I have been in my training, so I was happy with that. After that we stayed doing intervals of like 2 minutes running and 1 minute walking. The miles ticked slowly away.

At about 2.5 miles, we saw the guy in first place running back already. I was floored… He was really hauling butt! After that, it was a steady trickle of people already on their way back and I had a sobering moment realizing how slow I actually am, lol. It lasted for a second then I got back to my own business of putting one foot in front of the other.

The best feeling was heading down the stretch where I could see the finish line, just knowing that was it, we had done it. The best part of the entire event was that I ran it with my husband, and that made the entire day incredibly special.

The after party was awesome too… Nothing like ribs, beer and wine at 9am!
My recovery has been easy. I haven’t been too sore and didn’t injure myself. Amazingly, my knee didn’t bother me at all. My right Achilles did start to get sore towards the very end, but I just ran through that and it’s not bothering me now.

Obviously lessons learned are to train more and maybe get some coaching on how to stay injury and pain free for the half Marathon.

I’m BACK! Friday and Saturday’s Run/Walks

Who’s back?! I’m back! I have done 2 very short runs the last few days and I feel FANTASTIC. My last run was Saturday morning, and these are my stats.

Friday:

Saturday:

I’ve been doing run/walk intervals. Friday I did 1 minute walk, 1 minute run for 1 mile, and Saturday I did 2 minute run 1 minute walk. I’m super pleased with how I feel. My Asics felt great, I’m so happy about that.

I rested yesterday and today since I had some soreness in my shin muscles, but I’ll be back at it tomorrow.

Still recovering.

A feverish teething baby and recovering from a knee injury makes for no running yet. I guess it’s a good thing since I should probably recover as long as possible, but I am really getting antsy to get back to training. Our 10K is coming up soon and I want to be in much better shape than I’m in right now.

I plan to get back on it by this weekend at the latest. It’s hard because we’re a 1 car family right now, so there are usually errands to run when Mike gets home, and lately he’s been working the night shift at one of his jobs, which means there’s no car around the house from 3-11pm. Not easy to adjust to, but it should be short term. Once we move, it should be much easier to walk around to places close by.

Here’s my sad baby yesterday, where she slept most of the day and I spent most of the day being mommy and carrying her.

FINALLY! Pain Free.

Over the weekend, I had to buy several things. A knee brace and a pilates ball, with resistance bands. I am using the bands and ball to strengthen my legs and hips and the brace was recommended by my doctor. The doctor didn’t think I’ve done any serious damage other than a strain from overuse, but she did order an x-ray (which I haven’t scheduled yet) and 800 mg ibuprofen (which I won’t be taking). She also recommended a brace, which I did find at Ross for $16.99 (score) along with physical therapy.

Today was the first day I was mostly pain free, 2 weeks later. I’ve been doing various leg exercises to try and get stronger so this doesn’t happen in the future. I think I’ll be able to walk a little tomorrow, and I’m SUPER excited!

Tired of Resting.

Another day of soreness and no running, but some¬†baby carrying and walking. I’ve got a doctor’s appointment tomorrow at 3pm where hopefully she’ll rule out any serious damage. I’ll be glad if the results are just rest. I’ve spent more of today researching my pain location and possible injuries, and I’ve come up with something related to my MCL. I hope it’s not bad. I guess we’ll find out. I am not a big fan of the doctor because they charge just to tell you something needs rest most of the time, but I want to make sure I didn’t break anything since we’ve got some serious training coming up soon. All I know is I’m super anxious to get back to running, I REALLY really miss it.

Here’s a babywearing pic of us, walking in the meantime.
